I‘m all for a simple life – but sometimes it can feel like a very complicated process to get there!
I often get asked for the answer to how to simplify your life, and so I wanted to define an easy strategy to make life less complicated, and really it all distills down to 2 easy to remember steps – made famous by Leo Babauta in his simple living manifesto in 2007.
These 2 steps are as follows:-
STEP ONE – Identify what your priorities are
STEP TWO – Get rid of everything else
Whatever you do/have/spend time on in your life needs to count for you.
Too often we live a busy but not fulfilling life, wasting precious time on things that don’t really matter to us:-
- Things that other people get us to do
- Things that we feel we should do
- Items that we own for no real purpose or value to us.
The problem is that we don’t always realise that these things come at the cost of our own priorities and dreams – and can often be left wondering why we’re not moving towards them and seem to be treading water all the time.
Basically – if you can live more by your priorities (family, friends, work, home, helping others etc…) maximising your time with these whilst minimising everything else, then your life will become much more fulfilled.
You will be more focused on what you want from life and whats important to you, and will become able to ask yourself whether something is important to you next time you have to make a decision on how to spend your time.
You can see more clearly how things will move you towards or away from your goals, and act accordingly.
So, next time you are struggling to find time in life to do something you want to do, write down what you want from your life and therefore what your priorities are – if you have anything in your life that doesn’t help these in some way, its time to declutter!
