{Daily Task #1} Bin Bag Challenge – Rubbish

Task #1:

Take a black bag around the house and try and fill it with anything that is genuinely rubbish and needs to be thrown away.

My Tips and Advice:

Focus just on the rubbish in the house today, other genres like recycling and charity shop items will be tackled on other days – easy hey!

Your home will be easier to organise AND clean when there’s less stuff in it – and getting rid of genuine rubbish is the perfect place to start – that’s why this task is right there at number 1!

Every time I do a bin bag collection in my own home (whether it be for charity, recycling or plain rubbish) I find a bags worth of stuff pretty easily – I don’t know where it comes from as we are neat freaks (as I’m sure you’d expect!) – but things just accumulate, and it makes such a difference to the house when you know that all the rubbish has gone.

  • Empty all the bins
  • Look through the bathroom and bedroom cupboards for old toiletries and makeup
  • Hunt out damaged or broken items that cannot be fixed
  • Go through kitchen cupboards for out of date food
  • Venture into the shed, loft and the garage as well if you have time – things ALWAYS end up in the extremities of the house before they get to the tip, so you’re likely to find loads there!

How did you get on?

Filling a black bag was fairly easy and while I was at it I filled the car with stuff from the garden and took it to the local tip along with the black bag.

I want to do the same next Monday.

Great news Maureen! – Hope the habit sticks as it’s a great way to stay on top of things x

I managed to fill three bags from just the living room and kitchen! I had so much paper work / mail that wasn’t needed any more. Off to the recycling centre tomorrow. Excited for my next task.

Hi Danielle – great news! – It’s such a lovely feeling to lighten the load a little – that’s why I would always start with this for day one – good luck with the rest and please let me know how you go! x

Wow Daily Task 1 completed easily even after a weekend of enjoying your website and beginning my decluttering/organising. Looking forward to Daily Task 2. Thank you for helping me. It’s made a difference already.

Doing these in a slightly disjointed manner as Christmas events/children allow! Did no 1 just before Christmas and managed to fill two bags in 10 minutes!!! Looking forward to rest of week…

let me first start by saying i am one of the MOST disorganised people in the world, to be honest i am messy too! BUT i am so keen to turn my life around and now have a burning passion to get organised.
So to cut a long story short i have filled up 5 garbage bags full. Not rubbish per say [i am VERY messy but not dirty] but stuff that i thought “why am i clogging up my life with this stuff”, as i have never had organisational skills i dont, as yet, have many places for things [and so i have stuff everywhere].
5 bags later i feel much better 🙂

I’ve just started the organising! I almost didn’t bother with day 1 as I thought I was quite good at throwing stuff away. I managed to fill a black sack just from the downstairs toilet/utility, the bathroom and the children’s room!
I’m really happy I’ve found this website. I’ve tried to follow fly lady and habit hacker in the past. I have learnt some stuff from them but I feel this is more relevant to a family in the uk. I’m really excited to start!

Hi Lucy – I always find it amazing how easy it is to fill a bin bag no matter how tidy I think the house is! – so pleased you are enjoying the daily tasks so far – let me know how you find the tasks as I always love to read comments x

I wanted to start this week but am already behind since I’m in both a writing challenge AND a blogging challenge! It’s already Wednesday and I haven’t yet begun! I enlisted my 9yo daughter’s assistance so I could still complete this weekly challenge. She wanted me to time her to see if anyone else could fill a bag with trash from around the house more quickly than she did: It took her 22 minutes — she ran through the upstairs, all around the downstairs, and through the yard. Now on to Tuesday’s task!
